Background

I am the first son of Nikolai rem Gladio, and my family is a well-respected one amongst purebloods!
We have a good reputation in the Militum, and Father even won medals! They look amazing!
I am starting my military service soon. My Father's friends say it will toughen me up. I hope I will win medals too. I will show them to my brother when I'll come back!
"I know I was born to accomplish something great. It is my destiny to pave the way for my brother."

Pretty Flower.
That's what they kept calling me. Year after year, day after day, they'd come after the lessons and mock me for my lack of strenght. I thought it would be all over after the Academy: it was even worse in the Legion. Even the instructors would laugh at me for being too delicate to fight. They tried to break me. Pushed me down to the ground. The more I attempted to resist, the more brutal they'd become. I couldn't tell Father. I didn't want to shame him. Our legacy was in the Militum, and me...I was a failure.
It culminated on that moonlit night. They dragged me into the experimental grounds and pushed me right under a Magitek Reaper.
I remember her smile as the sound of my cries resounded in the night. It was the last thing I saw before fainting from the pain. That, and the shreds of bloodied flesh over the bone of my crushed limb.
"You shouldn't have messed with me. Keep laughing: one day you'll wish you had not."

They discharged me.
I thought Father would hate me for it, but I was wrong. I was wrong all along. He was infuriated, but not against me. When I woke up from the operation, he made me tell him everything.
He dragged all of my harassers in court trial. Justice was delivered and I was taught the greatest lesson of my existence: Justice offers Retribution only to those of higher ranks. While we could crush the savages under our boot, she, pureblood daughter of a Senator, got away unscathed.
If my rank wasn't high enough to punish her, then I'd have to find another way. If Senators held the power to sway the very rules of our nation, then I would observe and learn how to sway them.
"They like to show off their medals, don't they? Me? I do not expose my collection. It is filled with dirt, and we wouldn't want to stain your pretty little medals with dirt, would we?"

Her smile was just as I remembered it. How pure. How twisted. How full of arrogance. Haaa...how I longed to see it again on that lovely face! She had grown into a fair woman. The daughter of a Senator: a prize for the greedy. And it was all mine now.
How funny...how little it took for a Senator to condemn her own daughter to save appearances. To keep her delusion of power a little while longer. For as long as I would allow it. She dreamed of becoming Legatus. She probably had the skills. What a shame that I had to ruin it all for her. Stay here, where nobody will see you shine. Stay here, in my shadow, where you're not allowed to exist. A painting for all to see. Behave, and maybe tomorrow will be sweeter. Won't you smile, my pet? Smile for me like on that moonlit night.
"I am taking what I deserve and you cannot stop me. I am in control now. Just do what I say."

My little political games have drawn an unexpected kind of attention.
Although my career as a collector of dirt had started for personal reasons, I grew fond of my status as a Vicarium. As a politician, I was making a difference, I could tell. My convictions were real. My dedication to my party was genuine. People listened to what I had to say. And the more I was asserting what they wished to hear, the more they idolized me. For their adoration, I shamelessly shook hands with the despicable ones. I flirted with the devils. I held receptions for the foes I was only longing to destroy. Perhaps the means to elevate myself were questionnable, but if I had not exploited the flaws, another would have. Someone with less integrity.
I knew not everyone would agree with me. I knew that, despite my efforts, my ambition could be thwarted. The Frumentarium sees all. So when these agents came into my office, I thought I was done for. I thought they would execute me on the spot. But they didn't. They offered me a job instead.
"If they so desire me to be their spy, I shall rise above them all."

Pretty Flower was used to slander me. I have made it my strenght. Everything now is about appearances.
Perhaps this radiant mask had grown into me more than I intended. I could not get enough of the attention, bathing in admiration, teasing the fires of jealousy. I could build bridges with but a smile, and make them collapse on a whim. Everyone had something I could use to make them dance on my tune.
So when I learnt even you, Father, had a dirty little secret, something inside me festered. They say when you earn great power, you always lose something. They were right. Tonight, I lose you.
It was easy enough to use your own dog against you. But fear not - your secret will be safe. No one but me will ever know. They will remember you as the hero I need you to remain.
"I will cut ties with you before you even dare to stain my name. My reputation will remain pristine."

While the strong and the conquerors were bleeding out in the mud, we, the Voice of the People, were safely ruling over the nation. But just like the People, we were divided.
Every Face of the most popular Legions were a thorn in our nation. Lord Gabranth was a coward up until the very end. Lord Valens was a one-trick pony. Lord Gaius a traitor. Lord Nerva? An opportunist. Lady Vergilia? A two-faced moron. Lord Quintus? An old sentimental fool. And the Crowned Prince? Perhaps the most dangerous idiot of them all.
In such dire times, decisions must be taken to preserve the sovereignty of the nation. Someone needs to control the chaos before it spreads from within. Let that someone be me.
"Garlemald needs guidance in these troubled times. I will be the voice of Order. I will serenade the people with all the sweet they yearn for."

We could not escape civil war.
And it was for the best. The great cleansing of those incompetent leaders was necessary.
When too many strong voices erupt from the crowd, how come the People chose which one to follow? I have decided to make that choice an easy one.
Holding in your palm the intelligence network of a whole nation while being one of its Voice gives you a power beyond limits. Rumors were fed, agents were sent, and the truth behind the Emperor's death was smothered. All too convenient, wasn't it?
There was a storm coming. We knew. I had to quickly secure every piece of information I could, so the keys of influence would forever belong in my hands. With the shut-down of all our systems of communication, I would go in hiding with an ace up my sleeve. I cannot allow anyone to claim the throne and eradicate the Frumentarium as a remnant of the old regime.
"I rule the lives of many. An exhilarating power. One I will not part with so easily."

The Fall of Garlemald was a tragedy. But in every misfortune, there is good to be found.
While the Alliance was offering relief support to the refugees of the Eikon's enthrallment, they were also sowing the seeds of change in the weakened minds of my compatriots. Funny, how many called me a fragile flower in the past. And while I was blooming in the debris of our demised city, others were letting their pride perish into the hands of our enemies. An abhorrent sight.
Some refused to let themselves be conquered. Some were still ready to fight to reclaim our land. I could not let them down. I could not let our legacy and our privileges be robbed under my very eyes by the Alliance sympathizers. Of those refusing to bend the knee, I shall be the Senator.
"I will be their saviour. Their leader. My name will be on all lips again. The throne is empty...and they will carry me to the crown."

Rumours

Last updated: 13.06.2022Some of these rumors are untrue, speculation, or are greatly exaggerated.Common Rumors - Easily overheard"He has little pride to consort with the Populares; but alas, his reports on their discussions have been nothing short of entertaining. I'm amazed that these morons haven't figured out Fae Gladio is only attending their meetings for the laugh."- An Optimates deputy"A very considerate man for one affiliated with the Optimates. His help has been precious to build bridges between our different ideologies. Fae Gladio does not stop at our differences: he knows how to federate around our similarities."- A Populares deputy"I think he got along very well with Legatus Valens. I've seen him from afar a couple of times, when he visited Werlyt during the occupation."- An architectus of the VIIth."Lord Gabranth was obviously a role model for him. I can almost feel his admiration when he talks about how high those of savage descent can rise within the Legion."- A Pilus Prior of the IVth."I am pretty convinced he was a closed friend of Gaius van Baelsar. I remember he gave a few motivational speeches to the Legion's cohort when I was stationed at Ala Migho - or whatever that desertic hellhole was named."- A vicarium of the XIVth."Mikaelis is a delight to be around with. Well, unless you're planning to be the centre of attention, because he is quite a show-stealer. Almost annoyingly so." - A pureblood of noble descent.Uncommon Rumors - A little more difficult to hear."There is a white-claded garlean who saved me from a certain death when I collapsed in the Eblan Rime following a snow storm. I woke up near a fire. He tended to my wounds and even fed me. He said he has a shelter for those who are unwilling to accept the relief efforts of the Alliance. A hidden place, safe from the weather, with rations enough to feed a cohort."- A garlean refugee near camp Laterum."Have you heard of Mikaelis? You'd know him just seeing that pretty face of his, and if I were two decades younger, not married to your father and three decades less wise, I'd definitely attempt gallivanting with him. But he's a Gladio, and you know what they say about them - I wouldn't expect any less of him. Some hunch tells me he's not all he seems to be." - Tatiana mal Scaevola"Wasn't the Gladio first born betrothed to a Senator's daughter? What was her name...? She was quite a rising star in the Militum back in the days. I heard she gave up her military career to marry him. But he never did. I saw her at his arm a couple of times but...does anyone know what she became in the end?" - A gossiping lady at a reception."I heard that Mikaelis was quite popular among all genders. You'd think they would follow someone with a little more...stature. But noooo! They're all falling for that pretty smile. I have a better use of his charms in my mind, if you ask me!" - A gossiping young servant at a private reception.Rare Rumors - Very rarely overheard."I'd have taken him as a case study for the Medicus Academy, was he not my older brother." - Maximilian kir Gladio"Do not get fooled by his appearance. He may be unfit for battle, but he has ways of influence you may never dream to comprehend." - Lysander sas Gladio"Pretty Flower. That's how they used to call him in his cohort before the...incident... His leg got crushed so badly we had to perform amputation. He was discharged, after that. A scandal that ended in court trial. Ever wondered what happened to those who used to bully him? Well, don't. It's for the best." - Viria lux Lurio"His cane is a wonder of magitek technology. I have never seen him use it, though. Except for walking, that is. Never thought anyone could be so smug as to limp with that much panache. I suppose it fits the man." - A magitek engineer at Castrum Vesperum
